The Latin Facsimile of the Nuremberg Chronicle.

We are producing a limited edition of this famous first edition of the Nuremberg Chronicle.  We have bound the copies as the originals would have been using wooden boards, leather and brass hardware.  The paper and print size reflect the original size of the book as it was presented in 1493.  The paper was selected to have the same characteristics of the original.

An example of the complete book appears below.  The light color book would have been a pigskin binding.

We have produced some darker bindings made of calf skin.

Existing Facsimiles of the German Edition

Our search has found no facsimiles of the Latin edition of the book, which is the first edition.  We have found three facsimiles of the German edition, which is the second edition.

They are all quite beautiful and different from one another.

  • The first is a facsimile from 1933.  Produced in Leipzig Germany by F.W. Hendel in limited quantities of 1200 copies.  The copies were bound by H. Sperling in Leipzig.  This is a full size black and white copy of the German book that is bound using pressboard and paper boards.  The spine is vellum embossed in gold with the title "Hartman Schedel, Buch Der Chroniken" appearing at the top.

  • In 1979, Landmark Press produced the second German facsimile of the Chronicle.  It is smaller than the original, measuring 14.5 X 10.5 inches.  This copy is black and white print with a green binding and black label.

  • In 2001, Taschen produced a color copy of the German edition.  It has a padded velour binding with commentary in the beginning of the book.  This copy is the only color copy of the German edition.  It is the smallest of all the facsimiles, measuring 13.5 X 9.5 inches.
